Inside DevStudioCon 2024: What Wix Studio Showed Us About the Future of Web Development

Attending DevStudioCon 2024 — Wix Studio's flagship conference — was a reminder of how quickly the ground is shifting under web development. A room full of designers, developers and agency owners, all watching the same question play out on stage: what does building for the web look like when AI is no longer a side feature, but part of the default workflow?

I walked in expecting a product showcase. I walked out with a clearer sense of where the industry is actually heading.

A Conference Built Around a Real Shift

DevStudioCon wasn't framed as a typical product launch event. It was framed around a transition — from manually building every page, component and interaction, toward a workflow where AI handles a meaningful share of the groundwork, and human judgment decides what actually ships.

That distinction mattered throughout the day. The tools on stage weren't positioned as replacements for designers and developers. They were positioned as ways to remove the repetitive parts of the job so more time goes into the decisions that actually shape a product.

The Panel That Stuck With Me

One of the most engaging parts of the day was a fireside conversation featuring Varun Mayya and Tanmay Bhat, talking candidly about building, creating, and staying relevant in a landscape that keeps changing under your feet.

It was a good reminder that as tools get more powerful, the human layer — judgment, taste, restraint — becomes the part that's harder to copy.

Hyper-Efficient Websites, Not Just Faster Ones

A lot of the day focused on what Wix Studio is calling "hyper-efficient" web development — using AI not just to generate a first draft, but to compress the entire cycle of designing, building, testing and iterating on a site.

What stood out to me wasn't the speed itself. It was the shift in where time actually gets spent:

• Less time on repetitive setup, boilerplate structure, and first-draft layouts
• More time on strategy, content decisions, and refining the details that make a site feel intentional
• Faster iteration cycles, which means more room to test ideas instead of committing early

This mirrors something I've been thinking about in my own work — AI doesn't remove the need for a strong point of view. It just makes it more obvious when a project doesn't have one.

Why Being in the Room Matters

I could have read a recap of DevStudioCon online and picked up the headlines. But there's a difference between reading about a shift in the industry and sitting in a room while hundreds of people who build for a living react to it in real time.

Events like this are useful because they force a kind of collective gut-check:

• Which ideas got genuine energy from the room, versus polite applause
• Where other designers and developers are actually spending their effort right now
• What's still unsolved, even in tools built specifically to solve it

That context doesn't come through in a blog post or a product page. It comes from being there.

What I'm Taking Back to My Own Work

The biggest thing I'm carrying forward isn't a specific feature I saw on stage. It's a sharper question to ask before starting anything new:

"If AI can now handle most of the execution, what exactly am I bringing to this project that a tool can't?"

For me, that answer is usually the same: understanding the business, the user, and the outcome well enough to know what to build — and, just as often, what to leave out.

DevStudioCon didn't hand me a shortcut. It handed me a clearer lens for deciding where my time is actually worth spending.
